Pharmacology

Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) is an oral anti-viral drug approved for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated influenza in patients 2 weeks of age and older whose flu symptoms have not lasted more than two days. This product is approved to treat Type A and B influenza; however, the majority of patients included in the studies were infected with type A, the most common in the U.S. Efficacy of Tamiflu in the treatment of influenza in subjects with chronic cardiac disease and/or respiratory disease has not been established.Tamiflu is also approved for the prevention of influenza in adults and children aged one year and older. Efficacy of Tamiflu for the prevention of influenza has not been established in immunocompromised patients.Tamilfu is not a substitute for early

influenza vaccination on an annual basis

  : Mechanism

Oseltamivir is a cyclohexenecarboxylate ester that is the ethyl ester of Oseltamivir acid. An antiviral prodrug (it is hydrolysed to the active free carboxylic acid in the liver), it is used to slow the spread of influenza. It has a role as a prodrug, an EC 3.2.1.18 (exo-alpha-sialidase) inhibitor, an antiviral drug, an environmental contaminant and a xenobiotic. It is a cyclohexenecarboxylate ester, an amino

acid ester, a primary amino compound and a member of acetamides

Oseltamivir is an inhibitor of the influenza neuraminidase enzyme and is used as therapy and prophylaxis against influenza A and B. Oseltamivir has not been associated with clinically apparent liver injury. Oseltamivir (marketed as the product TamifluⓇ), is an antiviral neuraminidase inhibitor used for the treatment and prophylaxis of infection with influenza viruses A (including pandemic H1N1) and B. Oseltamivir exerts its antiviral activity by inhibiting the activity of the viral neuraminidase enzyme found on the surface of the virus, which prevents budding from the host cell, viral replication, and infectivity
